NAD+
What is NAD+?
NAD+ stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide.
The classic role of NAD + is a co-enzyme that catalyzes cellular redox reactions, becoming reduced to NADH, in many fundamental metabolic processes, such as glycolysis, fatty acid beta-oxidation, or the tricarboxylic acid cycle, which is the main source of energy for ALL cells.
NAD+ not only helps convert food to energy but also plays a crucial role in maintaining DNA integrity in the mitochondria and ensures proper cell function to protect our bodies from aging and disease.
Aging is marked by a systemic decrease in NAD + across multiple tissues. The dysfunction of NAD + biosynthesis plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of multiple diseases, including age-associated metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and mental disorders.
Benefits of NAD+:
- Increased mental clarity
- Better memory
- High concentration
- Improved moods
- Better problem-solving skills
- It activates your brain’s neuron function to help regenerate cells and protect the brain against cellular damage. This increases mental cognition and improves mental clarity, concentration, and memory.
- It improves your metabolism, making you feel more energetic and youthful, resulting in better physical performance and greater endurance.
- It can help improve conditions such as depression, anxiety, addictive tendencies, and mood disorders.
- It replenishes your levels of NAD that infections, metabolic stress, alcohol abuse, or other factors have depleted.
- It helps in the management of the effects of aging and age-related conditions.
Skin renewal requires a significant amount of energy at the cellular level to help in the desquamation process, where new skin cells are created, broken down, and replaced on the outermost layer of the skin. Results in clinical studies have shown that injectable and/or topical application of NAD+ can improve the appearance of aging skin. It has been shown to increase skin smoothness due to improved cellular turnover. It also improves fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, skin yellowing, pore size, erythema, and sebum excretion and is well tolerated by the skin. Overall, it can strengthen the skin barrier while improving skin functions and increasing elasticity and hydration.
NAD therapy can help improve various skin concerns, such as:
- Sagging skin
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Hyperpigmentation
- Dull skin
- Rough skin texture
- Dark spots
- Loss of skin volume
Injections of NAD+ seem to be secure and well-tolerated. The injection of NAD+ may cause adverse reactions and side effects, such as headache, shortness of breath, and constipation, which usually last minutes after the injection. Therefore, we start at a low dose and titrate up.
Also, in certain situations, NAD+ can increase plasma bilirubin and decrease levels of gamma-glutamyl transferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and aspartate aminotransferase, which is why we check your liver and kidney function periodically.
How quickly can I see the benefits of NAD+?
Almost immediately. Patients report mental clarity and energy within hours of taking their first dose.
How does NAD+ differ from HRT therapies?
Supplementing NAD+ does not replace the natural occurring levels of NAD in our body. It simply helps your cells work better. NAD is a “helper” coenzyme. It works by transporting electrons from one place to another inside a cell. So, you can think of each NAD coenzyme as a tiny shuttle bus responsible for taking electrons to work inside the mitochondria (the part of the cell responsible for metabolizing nutrients).
HRT therapies are used when the body’s hormone levels are low or not optimal.
Both therapies can have the same benefits and can be used simultaneously.
